Status: Furlough

Location: Europe
Field: France
Ministry: Medical Missions Assisting Church Planting

Ellen Doyle has been a medical missionary in Cameroon, West Africa, since 1998. Ellen grew up in a Catholic home and was saved in Steamboat Springs, CO, as a young adult. She went to the University of Nebraska Medical Center for her associate's degree in nursing and finished her BSN at Bob Jones University. In 1993 she went to Armenia with Dr. and Mrs. John Dreisbach, and it was there that she got a burden to become a full-time medical missionary. After completing a degree in Biblical counseling, Ellen began deputation and arrived in Africa in 1998.

For two years, she worked in Cameroon's capital city of Yaoundé with Dr. Carol Loescher and Carrie Wright. They had the privilege of establishing a medical clinic affiliated with a Bible seminary.

In 2000 she moved to the far north of Cameroon in the sub-Sahara region in hopes of starting a mobile medical clinic, but the government would not authorize the endeavor. After serving the nomadic people in that region, God directed her to Foumban for about ten years to assist Dr. Carol Loescher with the medical ministry among the Bamoun and Fulani people groups.

One of Ellen's favorite medical outreaches was participating in jungle clinics. Missionary Tom Needham used his airplane to evangelize unreached villages not accessible by vehicle. The clinics were effective in helping plant churches in these remote areas.

Along with the bush trips, Ellen spent many enjoyable summers volunteering as a camp nurse and counselor in the northwest part of Cameroon. Unfortunately, the political situation in Cameroon erupted in 2017, and the aviation/jungle ministry had to be curtailed for safety reasons. The conflict also impacted the camp, and it had to be closed.

In 2013, the Lord led Ellen to the town of Bafoussam where she assisted in a church plant under Mark Barilla's direction, doing Bible studies with neighborhood ladies and helping with children's Sunday school with Marnie Krause. When medical opportunities arose, Ellen advised and assisted those who were sick. In 2021, Ellen began traveling on medical mission teams led by Dr. Jack Mitchell. Several of these teams ministered in other African countries.

In 2016, Ellen was diagnosed with cancer. She underwent surgery and treatments in Germany, where excellent medical care was readily available. While in Germany, Ellen enjoyed participating in the church ministry in Heidelberg. In June 2023, Ellen transitioned to France, where she could continue ministering while also being closer to medical care. She desired to serve the Lord for many years to come. On February 17, 2024, Ellen's battle with cancer ended when the Lord took her Home to be with Him.
