Doug and Barbara Threlfall

Status: On the Field
Location: Asia
Field: South Korea
Ministry: Church Planting, Formal Bible Training

Doug and Barbara have been ministering to Koreans since 1980. Doug was reared in a pastor's home and Barbara on the mission field, first in Japan and then Korea, where her parents served with GFA. Like both sets of parents before them, Doug and Barbara also met at Bob Jones University. They graduated and were married in 1977. Called to missions but uncertain of the specific field to which the Lord was directing them, they served as short-term missionaries with Barbara's parents in South Korea, where Doug taught for one year at Bob Jones Memorial Institute (BJMI). Naomi, their only daughter and the oldest of their five children, was one month old when they traveled to Seoul in late August 1980. During their year in Korea, the Lord made it clear that He wanted them to serve full-time there.

Doug and Barbara returned to the States for deputation and were back in Korea in time for the 1982 fall semester at BJMI. For the next four years Doug taught at BJMI, training future Christian workers, especially men training for the ministry. Many of these men were ordained and have planted churches throughout Korea. In 1983, Seoul Bible Church was planted; it reaches both English and non-English speaking Koreans, U.S. military personnel, the foreign business community, and American and Canadian English teachers in the Seoul area. During the Threlfalls' four-year term, the Lord also added three sons to their quiver: Daniel, Jonathan, and Andrew.

Through God-orchestrated circumstances, the Threlfalls were denied entry visas back into South Korea. The Lord led them to partner with another fundamental missionary couple in planting a Korean immigrant church in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, an area that has thousands of immigrants from several Far East countries. Within four years (1988-1992) the Lord brought together an assembly of believers under the leadership of a Korean pastor. Their fifth and last child, Joshua, was born during this term in Vancouver.

In 1993 the Lord led them to seek entrance into South Korea once again, and this time they were granted missionary entrance visas. They returned to Korea in 1994 and have been ministering there to the present.

Doug continues to teach at BJMI and also, with his brother-in-law, Ken Johnson, co-pastors Seoul Bible Church. In 1998, Ken and his wife Rhonda began Seoul Christian School (SCS). The church now enjoys the added ministry of SCS teachers as they exercise their God-given gifts. The Threlfalls praise the Lord for His faithfulness in guiding them, for the opportunity to be used as a vessel in His hand, and the privilege be a part of GFA.
