What is “Great” about the Great Commission? :: Gospel Fellowship Association Missions

Roundtable #3: What is “Great” about the Great Commission?

The Great Commission gives Christ's final words to believers. In this roundtable, panelists Joel Arnold (Philippines), Bill Knipe (South Africa), Jonathan Latham (Mexico), Forrest McPhail (Cambodia), and Theo van Reijn (the Netherlands) discuss why the main activity of the Great Commission is making disciples, not building buildings, institutions, or programs. In terms of this main, overarching activity of making disciples, these reasons make the Great Commission great:

  1. It is great in its obligation. It is binding on every follower of Jesus Christ.
  2. It is great in its adaptability. It works everywhere when we are willing to deny ourselves and prioritize helping others know and follow Christ.
  3. It is great in its simplicity. Making disciples doesn’t require all of the accouterments and baggage that we often add to it.
  4. It is great in its reproducibility. We should have a long-term focus as we invest in training leaders. Proper discipleship trains disciples to make disciples.
  5. It is great in its goals, which are “teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” We do this by simple obedience to Christ and living a life of Christlikeness.

Be challenged about your own obedience to Christ's final command as you listen to this roundtable.
