What is the local church’s role in missions? God has so blessed and gifted His church that each local representation of it has the wonderful capability and privilege of furthering the Gospel in the world. The local church’s role is multifaceted and vital. Scripture describes the following major aspects of that role:

  • Participating: Church leaders and members pray about personal involvement (Acts 13:1-3).
  • Preparing: The church provides ministry experience (Acts 13:1; 2 Tim. 2:2).
  • Obeying: Those called obey God (Acts 13:1-5; 16:1-3).
  • Sending: The church releases those sent by the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:2-4).
  • Proclaiming: All believers proclaim the Gospel at home and abroad (Matt. 9:36-38; 28:18-20; 1 Thess. 1:8).
  • Praying: All believers "help" by praying (2 Cor. 1:11; Eph. 6:19-20; Rom. 15:30-31).
  • Advising: The church counsels and encourages (Gal. 2:9-10; 1 Cor. 16:18).
  • Supporting: The church cares for those who go in Christ's Name (3 Jn. 1:6-8).
  • Hearing: The church gives attention to reports and letters from missionaries (Acts 14:27; 15:4, 12; 21:19).
