How should we pray for young believers? The Apostle Paul instructs us in his letters to young churches. Writing to the church at Thessalonica, Paul says that thanksgiving is a foundational prayer (1 Thessalonians 1:2–10). He thanks God for the amazing grace of God already displayed in their lives at salvation, in their changed lives (1 Thessalonians 1:6-7; 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14), and for the glory to come (1 Thessalonians 3:9). Young believers often have a lot of baggage, and thanksgiving grounds us when our equilibrium gets off in our attitude towards those to whom we minister.
Paul also emphasizes intercessory prayer (accessing spiritual grace and power for others), committing himself to continual prayer for this young church (1 Thessalonians 1:2; 2 Thessalonians 1:1). His focus was on their spiritual needs.
