God’s standard for what qualifies a man to be a pastor/elder is much different from what is often assumed in churches around the world today. Using four key passages (1 Timothy 3:1–7, Titus 1:5–9, 1 Peter 5:1–5, and 2 Timothy 2:22–26), we summarized the qualifications necessary for a pastor/elder. We observed that a pastor/elder is simply an ordinary example of what all Christians should be—in other words, his life is one that can be imitated. Thus, any pastor/elder should be able to mentor another man into spiritual leadership. Men can be discipled into the kind of spiritual leadership described by these passages in every possible cultural context.
