Is Risk Worth It?

Our Lord did not call us to a life of safety, ease, and comfort. His invitation was to take up a cross and follow Him—even unto death. Missionaries have carried the Gospel into the most dangerous circumstances, facing debilitating illness, threats of violence, lack of sanitation, rampant crime, and political and economic instability. How does the Lord produce boldness in us? How do we know when to accept the risk and when to avoid risk?

In this roundtable, panelists Todd Beaman (Zambia), Forrest McPhail (Cambodia), and two workers in Restricted Access Nations discuss this question. Passages such as Matthew 19:29, 2 Corinthians 4:12, Matthew 16:24-25, Philippians 3:10, Acts 14:22, 2 Timothy 1:7-8, and John 12:23-26 inform their thinking. They conclude that risk is worth it because it gives us the opportunity to share the Gospel with those who otherwise would never have the opportunity to hear it and it gives us an opportunity to demonstrate that Jesus Christ is worth it.
